Many of us think of dependency as addiction, but dependency can affect us in more subtle ways. Are you currently dependent on anything outside of yourself to feel better? Are you dependent on a pharmaceutical or on a drug? Are you dependent on relationships or the right kind of weather? Are you dependent on your status or your tribe? Is there anything in your life that if you lost it, you might feel sad or anxious or even devastated?

The worst thing about our dependencies is that they may feel like the only real solution to our problems. How open are you to trying new methods? How likely are you to try a practice first, before going to something more familiar? How likely are you after the practice, to consider whether or not the practice has made enough of a difference to not return to your more familiar choice?

What practices will you use as your “go-to” choices on your tough days? Are you willing to make a plan now? My more successful clients often have two or three practices they go to immediately when they are triggered. They have them readily available and use those before they try anything else. If it meant you could be successful, if it meant you could be healthy and happy and free of dependency, would you be willing to create your plan today? What commitment are you willing to make to yourself right now?

I have a single favorite question I like to ask in the work I do. Whether you decide to go for it, giving everything of yourself to improving your brain function or you would rather start small, the most important thing you can do on any day is to take a step. What one thing can you do today toward improving your brain function?
Take that step and however you decide to move forward, I wish you tremendous success on your journey.
